Counselors

Counselors are selected from a wide applicant pool of highly qualified Emory University undergraduates. They have experience working with and mentoring youth and are dedicated to providing a great experience for the youth who attend C&C each year.

Gabby Moore, Counselor Coordinator

I am a senior at Emory University. I am double majoring in Educational Studies and Anthropology/Human Biology and have aspirations to become a Pediatrician. I am a native of Tuskegee, Alabama and am passionate about working with children and teenagers of all ages. I am involved in the Emory and Greater Atlanta Community with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; I work as a tutor, and volunteer with many organizations including the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston. I enjoy being a mentor to many, and serve as a Resident Advisor. During my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exercising, and listening to music.

Christopher Rhodes

Hi my name is Christopher Rhodes and I am a 2011 graduate of Emory University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Studies. Originally raised in Orlando, I attended a private college preparatory boarding school located in Concord, Massachusetts. In college, I took an interest in Theater which has subsequently lead me to aspire to become a film director and producer. Alongside taking part in many different film projects here on campus, I have worked as a production assistant and acted as an extra in films in both Atlanta and Orlando. When I’m not busy pursuing my passion, I also like to participate in community building service projects. Since my freshman year in college, I have been an active participant in community service through many different venues at Emory including, the Brotherhood of Afrocentric Men, Volunteer Emory, and the Office of University and Community Partnerships. As an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., I have volunteered at the Samuel Jones Boy’s & Girl’s Club, Miller Grove Baptist Church, and B.E.S.T. Academy. Next fall, I plan on pursuing a Master degree in Film, Video, and Digital Imaging at Georgia State University, and ultimately become a film producer and director. I am looking forward to serving again as a counselor at Challenge & Champions!

2011 Counselors

Devan Cortland

Hi, my name is Devan Cortland and I am a full time counselor for 2011. I was born in Toledo, Ohio and I moved to Atlanta to attend Emory. I am a rising junior at Emory University’s business school, Goizueta, and I’m double concentrating in finance and accounting. Eventually, I would like to work for one of the big four accounting firms. In my spare time I like to play basketball, play football, and watch movies. I am an active student ambassador to prospective high school students, and I can’t wait to work with Challenge & Champions this summer!

Luisa Cuervo, Part-time Counselor

My name is Luisa Cuervo and I am a rising senior at Emory University. I am double majoring in Psychology and French Studies, I am passionate about Theater, and I love Emory. I am originally from Colombia (South America), grew up in South Florida, and have lived in the suburbs of Atlanta for the past four years. Other than being a student at Emory, I love serving the Emory Community as active member of the University Catholic Center, a technician for Theater Emory, an active brother of Alpha Phi Omega National Co-Ed Service Fraternity, and an Orientation Leader. I love people. After graduating from Emory I am hoping to work in the non-profit sector, possibly with organizations focusing on education in some capacity. Other things I love are traveling, most things related to the culinary arts, music, books, movies, and spending quality time with others. More than anything, however, I love any mix of those things. I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to be a part of Challenge & Champions this summer!

Kimberly Phillips, Part-time Counselor

My name is Kimberly Phillips and I have just finished my first year at Emory University. I’m a dance minor and haven’t decided on a major yet. All I know is that I want to be able to help people and make difference, however small, with whatever I decide to do in the future. I was born in Guyana but have lived in Jamaica for most of my life until my recent move to Georgia. In my spare time I enjoy dancing and spending time with my family. I am especially passionate about working with children and cannot wait to be a counselor at Challenge & Champions!
