Academic courses are offered in 4 areas: language arts, math, social studies and science. All classes are developed as enrichment curriculum for this age student and build upon the Georgia Performance Standards. Classes are thematic and intentionally designed to engage and excite students and develop a love of learning. Critical reading and higher order thinking skills are a backbone of all of the courses offered. Each year new courses are offered so that returning students have a unique set of offerings from which to choose. Students attending choose 2 of the 4 courses offered.

2012 Academic Courses

Man vs Wild: Math in the Amazon Rainforest

Imagine. You are trekking through the Amazon Rainforest in search of one of the largest snakes in the world: the anaconda. You wonder: just how long would it take the anaconda to digest you if it ate you whole. Or perhaps you are wondering how long it takes for a school of piranhas to devour a cow. Maybe you are a part of an activist team trying to prevent the deforestation of the rainforest for the good of humanity and for the preservation of millions of species in the Amazon. To be an explorer of this adventure, you will need to know a few survival tips: area, volume, number sense, customary and metric conversions, speed, distance, rate, and percentages. Without this knowledge, you just might be eaten whole by a snake, have the worst hair day of your life, or become a jaguar’s lunch. Just imagine.

Physical Science Explorers

We all live in on this planet but how well do we really understand it? How do things move? Why do some things go “snap, crackle, pop”? In this class we will dig into these daily mysteries and learn some basic chemistry and physics through hands on activities, technology, and discovery. You can’t be an explorer without using your senses and understand how scientists think and carry out their work so we will learn these, too. Creative science minds are welcomed in this class along with those who think science is either too hard or confusing. We challenge you to become a Physical Science Explorer.

Urban and City Spaces: Social Studies in Action

Did you know that more people are now living in cities than ever before? It takes a lot to make a city livable and it’s important for people to have a say in how their city looks and operates. In this class you will learn about urban areas and city planning and construct a model city of your dreams. You will get a chance to see how creativity, government, the environment, and city services like transportation and communication can build great places to live and visit.
